What to do During a Power Outage

October 17, 2019

If you find yourself in the dark during a power outage there are a few steps you can take to ensure that you and your family stays safe.

  1. Check a power outages map to see if the outage is noted or purposely done by a provider. Occasionally a grid wide outage is necessary to certain renovations or alterations in your community. If the power cut has not been noted use your mobile phone to flag the issue.
  2. Look for any damages to power lines. This can be caused by fallen debris or a tree breaking.
  3. Assess your property thoroughly by trying as many power sources and light switches as you can to identify whether you have any electricity.
  4. Ask your street and community if they are also experiencing a power cut to identify whether it is only your property that’s down. If your home or office is a one off outage then this could be signifying a problem with your wiring or switchboard. Your neighbours are also experiencing a black out? Its most likely a grid issue.
  5. Be sure to protect yourself and your family or workplace, safety should come first. Unplug and switch off all your appliances and make sure your oven and refrigerator is closed.

When handling a power outage, head to a government website or AusGrid to report the problem. You can make your home a more energy efficient place to help you during the next power outage. Stock up on candles, matches, torches and battery or solar powered light sources like fairy lights or lamps. Having a portable phone charger handy will keep you in contact with emergency services or neighbours.
